The Origin of the Name “Kumluca”: A Watermelon Tale
Before there was any settlement in what is now the center of Kumluca, a farmer from the nearby village of Sarıkavak planted watermelons on a sandy and shrubby area along the western bank of the Cavur Stream. Thanks to the fertile soil, the watermelons grew exceptionally large. When the farmer took them to nearby villages to sell, curious locals asked where they were grown. He would reply, “in the sandy place by the stream.” Over time, this phrase spread among the people, and the area eventually came to be known as "Kumluca," which loosely translates to “sandy place.”
In the Footsteps of Ancient Cities: From Olympos to Rhodiapolis
Kumluca’s charm lies not only in its natural surroundings but also in its historical richness. The district is home to several significant ancient cities such as Olympos, Corydella, Rhodiapolis, Idebessiois, and Gagae. Among them, Olympos is the most visited by both local and foreign tourists. Excavations carried out there in 1991 revealed historical artifacts that further highlighted the region's cultural and archaeological importance.

Kumluca boasts a 30-kilometer-long coastline, offering great potential for tourism. Adrasan Bay and Olympos Bay, located in the Adrasan neighborhood, host various hotels, motels, guesthouses, and restaurants. Karaöz Bay in the Mavikent neighborhood is mainly known for its holiday resorts. The coastline between Mavikent and the Finike district is dotted with wooden houses (called "obalar") built by locals.
